Spiced Apple Bobs

Spiced Apple Bobs

Named after a traditional Halloween game, recently harvested apples are abundant in late autumn. This is a child-friendly version of mulled wine or mulled cider. Adding a garnish should make the mini party animals feel very grown-up!

Serves: 8

Dietary: vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, milk-free,

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 30 minutes gentle heating

1 litre apple juice
500 ml tap water
1 red apple, cut into wedges, core removed but the skin on
1 orange, sliced
A mixture of cloves, star anise, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods to taste.

  1. Place all ingredients into a pan.
  2. Heat gently for 30 minutes. (The drink should not be allowed to get hot enough to burn, but warming gently for 30 minutes will allow the flavours to infuse the liquid).
  3. If you prefer, strain the spices out before serving.
  4. Serve, including a piece of fruit in each glass.

  • Drinking sufficient fluids is essential to maintaining our health.
  • Serving drinks without added sugar supports a healthier diet.

  • A combination of different fruit juices could be used. Pomegranate or cranberry could give a spectacular colour (watch out for added sugar in the juice, though!)
  • Try different spices – root ginger and lemon could be included to give a very different taste.
